The local council mentioned they could not remove the eyes without harming the artwork.

A teenager from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after allegedly defacing a sizable blue sculpture of a mythical creature by affixing googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in the state of South Australia on that day, facing with a single charge of property damage.

Officials commented at the moment of the September incident, the municipal authorities said that surveillance video showed a individual placing fake eyes on the artwork, which residents have dubbed the “Cast in Blue”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the court she was unwell, according to news outlets, with the magistrate advising her to find a lawyer before her upcoming hearing in December.

Sculpture after eye removal
The damaged sculpture following the googly eyes were removed.

A day after the reported event, the city leader said that repairs to the popular public artwork would be expensive as the adhesive eyes were impossible to be removed without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those people of our community who have embraced Cast in Blue.”

The mayor said the local government would seek the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the vandalism.

At the time the sculpture was first proposed, it received mixed reactions from the area residents due to its price tag and appearance.

Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the creators influenced by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater discovered in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.

Formal name vs. local name
Cast in Blue is its official name but locals called the artwork the ‘Blue Blob’.
