The administration put out a press release referencing research papers to support claims that acetaminophen taken by expectant mothers leads to autism, but medical experts describe the evidence as “limited” and “inconclusive”.
According to a surgeon and senior fellow, the official statement gives the appearance of extra evidence by linking to the same studies repeatedly.
For instance, a recent review paper from Mount Sinai and Harvard appears like independent research efforts, and a Boston Birth Cohort study is also linked twice.
“So you say a Harvard study discovered the identical result as the Johns Hopkins research and the Mount Sinai paper. It can give the impression that the same results have been achieved in one study after another, all from renowned institutions,” Singer said.

It requires a much higher bar for proving causation than correlation. Proving causation would mean demonstrating that eliminating exposure to Tylenol would decrease the autism incidence.

A further method to verify the research assertions is to examine what research is being left out.
As an instance, the statement excluded a research from Sweden published in 2024 that followed nearly two and a half million births and compared siblings.
Singer clarified that the association vanishes when comparing siblings, who have greater shared genetics and environment than comparison groups in other studies.
“This suggests that associations observed in other models may have been attributable to confounding,” the researchers wrote.
Singer and Scott concur that the Tylenol claims are reminiscent of anti-vaccine rhetoric.
Scott said that this is part of a pattern of exploiting really weak evidence based on really poor quality studies.
