UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
