In the wake of a crucial victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has dramatically narrowed the deficit in the title race. Now sitting just 12 points behind leader the British driver and leading teammate his McLaren rival, everything is in place for a thrilling three-way championship battle at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman's latest win was anything but predictable. Although he delivered a masterful drive for his team, the race outcome was largely determined by a costly strategic move from the McLaren team. Deciding to stay on track during an early safety car period, McLaren presented the advantage to their rival, who pounced without hesitation.
"I'm thrilled, I'm eager to go there and give it my best shot," he stated. "I go in there with just positive energy. I'll push to the limit I can but simultaneously, should I fall short, I still know that I had a fantastic season."
This philosophy according to him removes much of the weight of expectation. His focus for the last race is simple: to extract everything possible from himself and the car.
What makes this late-season charge truly astonishing is the margin he has fought back. Following the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, he was a staggering 104 points behind the then-leader Oscar Piastri and had openly dismissed his championship hopes.
The shift began with major performance updates introduced by Red Bull at the Monza. Adjustments to the car's floor and aerodynamic package rectified persistent handling problems, allowing Verstappen to push to the limit with the car once more.
Following those upgrades, his form has been completely formidable, achieving five victories and several top-three finishes. He was quick to highlight the teamwork behind this resurgence.
"We've won races where maybe the odds were against us, by making the right call as a unit," he noted. "The way I work with my race engineer and the whole team... we are deeply connected."
As the teams head to Abu Dhabi, the mathematics is perfectly defined.
The intensity falls squarely on McLaren, who have watched a comfortable advantage slip away due to unfortunate events, including a twin DSQ in Las Vegas. From his perspective, this position allows for freedom, turning the final race into a pure shot at the title with everything to gain.
