New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
Just last month, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent development, Mayor Adams changed his position, stating he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“It is crucial to energize the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how critical this election is,” the mayor commented.
The mayor further explained, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.
In a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a contentious mayoral debate.
