The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
