Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's CEO Steps Down Following Shift Towards Chicken.

A head of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the UK might have reached peak pizza while diversifying the franchise into poultry items has been ousted after disagreements with its governing body.

Leadership Transition

Rennie is exiting after just two years in charge, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the company's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's searches for a new leader.

The outgoing executive, who served at Domino's for over 20 years, had sought to pivot the UK's leading pizza food delivery firm towards poultry-based products, remarking recently there was not “significant expansion” left in the British pizza industry. He said chicken was the most rapidly expanding menu item in the international market.

Governance Disagreements

It is understood that there was tension between the CEO and the governance team over his approach and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.

New Brand Introduction

In the autumn, the chain launched its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which Rennie referred to as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is piloting it in over 200 locations in the North West region and Northern Ireland.

While the company is still intending to launch it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as scheduled, it views fried chicken as a supplement for its core pizza business.

Leadership Comment

Bull, the Domino's chair, stated: “Directors think that there are a number of opportunities to enhance value and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing identifying the ideal CEO to lead the disciplined execution of that expansion plan.”

Industry Challenges

Earlier this month, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said transactions dipped by one and a half percent in the third quarter. In the summer, it warned that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed reduced spending in the run-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a 15% drop in interim earnings.

Competitors are also struggling. Another major chain revealed the shutting of multiple locations a month ago, after the company behind its UK venues entered insolvency.

Health Efforts

Trying to keep up with market shifts towards balanced diets, the company has launched reduced-calorie items, such as its light base range of bakes below 400 kcals as well as vegan and wheat-free options. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.

Acting Leadership

Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and was formerly with the betting firm William Hill. It is understood that she does not want to take on the chief executive role on a full-time basis.

Frampton stated: “The company has a several ongoing growth and efficiency programs that we will be focused on implementing at pace.”

She said these involved further work on the organization's logistics network and product development, and its loyalty scheme.

Domino's is also without a permanent finance director until March 16, when a new appointee comes aboard from the drinks company a well-known firm. Until then, Richard Snow acts as acting financial officer.
