Mikel Arteta has expressed concern that his team's chase for titles this campaign is being threatened by a worrying circle of injuries and a grueling fixture list.
Star player Declan Rice missed the midweek clash to Belgium due to sickness. In addition, attacker Leandro Trossard and defender William Saliba remain unavailable.
There was, on a brighter note, better news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian forward added to their European squad. He replaces the injured youngster Max Dowman, who picked up an foot problem.
"Practice, no because we don't have time to train. But obviously the fact that you are without players, you are placing demands on other players more, there's a knock-on effect to that and it's a truly dangerous cycle."
Dowman's issue is the most recent in a extensive list of injuries for the club. Since the beginning of last season, they have recorded 95 injuries, the second-most total in the English top flight.
Arteta dismissed the idea that training intensity were to culprit, citing a shortage of opportunity for sessions. He highlighted the strain on fit players, some of whom have played over 150 games in two seasons.
Despite a major summer spend over £250 million, Arteta stated the club is unlikely planning to dip into the January transfer market.
"At the moment we're just focusing on getting the players back and hopefully it will be a question of a short time," he commented. "We know how crucial those coming weeks are going to be."
The squad suffered their first defeat in 18 games at the hands of Aston Villa, reducing their lead at the top of the Premier League to two clear points.
Attention now shifts to the European stage, where a sixth consecutive group victory would virtually secure a top-eight place. Winger Gabriel Martinelli could make history by scoring in a fifth straight successive Champions League match.
"We are disappointed with the result, but we have to move forward," Martinelli stated. "This isn't like all is going wrong because we lost one game. So we remain united."
